Agencies aid in Lake Martin clean-up

Contributed

Officials from state and county agencies and private industry met today, January 5th, at Wind Creek State Park to discuss tornado debris which was revealed when Lake Martin reached its normal winter pool level.  This debris is in the Sandy Creek area of Tallapoosa County.

Solutions to remove the estimated 100 cubic yards of debris include the use of labor from the Department of Corrections along with additional state agency assets.

The first step in the process will be discussions with homeowners about the possible use of private land to hold debris temporarily and for ingress and egress to the site.   Officials are confident that the debris can be removed within two-weeks after work begins barring inclement weather. All removal will be completed before lake levels are restored March 1st.

Organizations represented at this meeting were the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, Department of Corrections, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Department of Transportation, the Forestry Commission, Tallapoosa County and Alabama Power Company.

Over 15,000 cubic yards of debris was removed from Lake Martin during the summer.
